He attended Cumberland University in Lebanon, TN, studied law and was
admitted to the bar. He established his law practice in Centre, Alabama
in 1873. He was also editor for the Cherokee Advertiser. He represented
Cherokee County in the lower side of the Alabama legislature from 1877-1878
and was chosen as a Cherokee County delegate to the Alabama Constitutional
Convention in Montgomery, Alabama, serving from May 21 to Sept.
3, 1901. He married Lula McSpadden, only child of Samuel King McSpadden
and Charlotte Ann Garrett, on October 5, 1876.

I initially began this research in an attempt to determine who my ggggrandfather’s (Ansel Carden b. 1798) ancestors were. I believe I have accumulated enough evidence to support a strong circumstantial case that he is descended from Reuben/Rubin Carden b. 1775, and I state this case below. I believe the following circumstantial evidence suggests that Ansel's (b. 1798) father was Reuben Carden (b. 1775):
1. Family legend states that his father was Reuben–confirmed by
a conversation with a descendent of Presley in 2006.
2. A will that outlines Reuben's bequeathment of property dated
from the 1840s. It includes a life estate to his wife Stacy and then
equal distribution to Presley, Wesley and Ansel. Presley and Wesley
are both known sons of Reuben, and it logically flows that Ansel was also
a son given the equal distribution of property and the fact that Presley's
son Ansel (spelling from the 1850 NC census) was not yet born. I
have seen this ansel’s name also spelled Ansil and Ancel.
3. Reuben had a male child under 10 in the 1800 census. Wesley
and Presley were both born after that, both in 1815--they must have been
twins and are both 35 in the 1850 census).
4. Literature I have seen re: the 13th Tennessee Cavalry refers to
Ansel's ( b .1798) son Landon serving in the regiment with Kinchlow "his
cousin." Kinchlow was Presley's son. If Ansel and Presley had
been brothers--sons of Reuben--then Landon and Kinchlow would have been
first cousins.
5. One of Presley's sons is named Ansel/Ansil/Ancil--probably after
his uncle.
6. Presley was in NC in 1850 and had moved to Carter County, TN by
1860. He probably went where his older brother Ansel had already
established himself and had become a prominent landowner and public official.
7. The Carden DNA Project (All quotes below are attributable to Arthur
Carden):
“Eddie Carden (Edward Glen) lives in Virginia but was born in Tennessee. His 25-marker result matches the Cheshire Haplotype exactly.His earliest proven ancestor is John Cardin of Mecklenberg County Virginia, the father of Reubin Carden born about 1775.”
“Bill Carden (William Andrew) lives in Tennessee.His wife Rosemarie has persuaded Bill to submit a sample to help identify his Carden origins. It is identical with the Cheshire Haplotype over all 25 markers, so undoubtedly he has a Cheshire ancestor. Bill’s earliest proven ancestor, Ansel Carden, was also from Tennessee, but if Rosemarie is able to go further back it may be appropriate to include him in one of the groups above.”
My note--these two match exactly, (Eddie is of Reuben’s line and Bill is from Ansel’s) the exact DNA match proves they had a common ancestor—not necessarily Reuben but someone in Reuben’s line. Even though the link may be 10-20 generations further back it is just another piece of the circumstantial puzzle.

I believe the following circumstantial evidence suggests that Ansel's (b. 1798) father was Reuben Carden (b. 1775):
1. Family legend states that his father was Reuben–confirmed by
a conversation with a descendent of Presley in 2006.
2. A will that outlines Reuben's bequeathment of property dated
from the 1840s. It includes a life estate to his wife Stacy and then
equal distribution to Presley, Wesley and Ansel. Presley and Wesley
are both known sons of Reuben, and it logically flows that Ansel was also
a son given the equal distribution of property and the fact that Presley's
son Ansel (spelling from the 1850 NC census) was not yet born. I
have seen this ansel’s name also spelled Ansil and Ancel.
3. Reuben had a male child under 10 in the 1800 census. Wesley
and Presley were both born after that, both in 1815--they must have been
twins and are both 35 in the 1850 census).
4. Literature I have seen re: the 13th Tennessee Cavalry refers to
Ansel's ( b .1798) son Landon serving in the regiment with Kinchlow "his
cousin." Kinchlow was Presley's son. If Ansel and Presley had
been brothers--sons of Reuben--then Landon and Kinchlow would have been
first cousins.
5. One of Presley's sons is named Ansel/Ansil/Ancil--probably after
his uncle.
6. Presley was in NC in 1850 and had moved to Carter County, TN by
1860. He probably went where his older brother Ansel had already
established himself and had become a prominent landowner and public official.
7. The Carden DNA Project (All quotes below are attributable to Arthur
Carden):
“Eddie Carden (Edward Glen) lives in Virginia but was born in Tennessee. His 25-marker result matches the Cheshire Haplotype exactly.His earliest proven ancestor is John Cardin of Mecklenberg County Virginia, the father of Reubin Carden born about 1775.”
“Bill Carden (William Andrew) lives in Tennessee.His wife Rosemarie has persuaded Bill to submit a sample to help identify his Carden origins. It is identical with the Cheshire Haplotype over all 25 markers, so undoubtedly he has a Cheshire ancestor. Bill’s earliest proven ancestor, Ansel Carden, was also from Tennessee, but if Rosemarie is able to go further back it may be appropriate to include him in one of the groups above.”
My note--these two match exactly, (Eddie is of Reuben’s line and Bill
is from Ansel’s) the exact DNA match proves they had a common ancestor—not
necessarily Reuben but someone in Reuben’s line. Even though the
link may be 10-20 generations further back it is just another piece of
the circumstantial puzzle.

1652 in VA. Robert was born about 1630 in Hillington Parish, Middlesex,
England and died Bet 18 Feb - 05 Mar 1683/84 in Rappahannock County,
VA. Elizabeth Moss was born abt 1634 in Hillington Parish, Middlesex,
England and died after Sept 1697 in VA.
